Signia Pure Charge&Go IX Hearing Aid Review

Signia Pure Charge&Go IX Review – Addressing the Group Conversation Challenge

In October 2023, Signia launched in Australia the Pure Charge&Go IX hearing aid range on Signia’s latest sound processing engine; Integrated Xperience platform (IX for short).  The Pure Charge&Go IX hearing aids are available in three performance levels: Premium – 7IX, High-end – 5IX and Mid-range – 3IX.

Before we talk about the hearing aids, lets have a look at Signia’s new sound processing engine Integrated Xperience. This new technology has been designed to address the number one complaint of individuals wearing hearing aids – being able to hear clearly in challenging group conversation situations.

The Group Conversation Challenge.

Hearing is a fundamental sense that allows individuals to connect with the world and engage in meaningful communication. However, for those with hearing loss, participating in group conversations presents unique challenges that can significantly impact their social interactions.

One of the primary challenges faced by individuals with hearing loss in group conversations is the limited auditory access to spoken information. In a group setting, multiple voices, background noise, and overlapping conversations can make it difficult for those with hearing impairments to discern and understand spoken words. This challenge can lead to frustration and a sense of isolation as individuals may miss crucial parts of the conversation.

Traditionally, hearing aids have used directional microphones to help individuals hear better in group conversations.  Directional microphones create a front focus beam aimed towards one specific direction or individual speaker, reducing background noise and improving the clarity of the targeted speaker.  Directional microphones assist individuals in group conversations, but they have one significant limitation related to their design – individuals must be always facing the speaker.  However, due to the dynamic nature of group conversations, this is not always possible.  During group conversation, it can be difficult to keep up with the conversation and always face the speaker, as conversations can flow rapidly between different speakers.  In addition, speakers often talk over each other!

Signia Integrated Xperience with Real-Time Conversation Enhancement

Signia has addressed the group conversation challenge with a new ground-breaking technology called Real-Time Conversation Enhancement, available in Signia’s recently released Integrated Xperience (“IX” for short) range.

During group conversations with multiple speakers, Real-Time Conversation Enhancement pinpoints the locations of each individual speaker and generates multiple directional microphone beams focussed on each of the speakers, enhancing all conversation partners in real-time.   This is done via a three-step process:

  1. Analyse – Processes 192,000 data points every second to detect speakers and analyse conversation dynamics.
  2. Augment – Uses the data that’s analysed to control multiple directional focus beams that lock onto and dynamically highlight each speaker’s voice amidst the noise.
  3. Adapt – The focus beams update 1,000 times per second to adapt to evolving conversations. This allows the real-time tracking and enhancement of multiple moving speakers, ensuring wearers can fully engage in group conversations.

During dynamic group conversations, Signia Integrated Xperience’s RealTime Conversation Enhancement technology, ensures individuals can hear clearly, even if they are not directly facing the person speaking or turning their head to engage with others. The below video shows the technology in action.

Models

Pure Charge&Go IX

The new Signia Pure Charge&Go IX hearing aids are available in two receiver-in-canal (RIC) models:

 (1) Pure Charge&Go IX and

 (2) Pure Charge&Go T IX

Each model is available in 10 different colours, across three performance levels; 3IX (Standard), 5IX (Advanced) and 7IX (Premium).

In addition to a longer battery life, the slightly larger Pure Charge&Go T IX model has a built in telecoil for hearing in places with loop systems.  Using a telecoil with a loop system can improve the sound quality in situations with a lot of background noise or when the individual is sitting far away from the sound you want to hear e.g. at church or a lecture.

Rechargeability

With every generation, Signia improves the rechargeable performance of their hearing aids.  The Li-ion power cell of Pure Charge&Go IX delivers up to 24 hours of use on a single charge including 5 hours of streaming.  The larger Pure Charge&Go T IX delivers an impressive 36 hours of use on a single charge including 5 hours of streaming.

In terms of charging options, there are three different models available: (1) Standard (2) Portable and (3) Dry&Clean

Standard

Dry&Clean

The Portable charger is small and designed to fit in the pocket or handbag.  Inside the Portable charger is a powerbank with the capacity to provide full three chargers of the hearing aids, before the charger itself needs to be recharged.  This can be done via connection to USB-C or via Qi wireless charging.

The Dry&Clean charger features a dehumidifying and UV sanitising functionality.  Very useful if the hearing aids are being used in challenging humid environments.

Connectivity

The Pure Charge&Go IX hearing aids offer improved connectivity options, increasingly more important in today’s connected world.  They support direct audio streaming from both Apple (Made for iPhone) devices, and Android (ASHA) devices. In addition, the new IX range will be able to support the new LE Audio streaming protocol with a firmware update available early next year. LE Audio promises to eventually offer more universal low energy audiostreaming, meaning it should become the standard in consumer electronics.

Signia Pure Charge&Go AX Hearing Aid Review

Signia Pure Charge&Go AX Review – Enhancing the wearer’s experience

In May 2021, Signia launched in Australia the Pure Charge&Go AX hearing aid range on Signia’s latest sound processing engine; Augmented Xperience platform (AX for short).  The Pure Charge&Go AX hearing aids are available in three performance levels: Premium – 7AX, High-end – 5AX and Mid-range – 3AX.  Before we talk about the hearing aids, lets have a look at Signia’s new sound processing engine Augmented Xperience.

If you regularly go to the movies, for most people the dialogue is always clearly audible.  No matter the scene of the movie, whether it is set in a nightclub, a busy street or even a war zone, you can always hear the dialogue.  This is no accident.  The filmmakers go to great lengths to ensure the dialogue is clearly audible.  This is done by recording multiple soundtracks.  A soundtrack with the dialogue and separate soundtracks for the background sound (e.g. background street noises), let’s call this the SoundScape.

During production, these separate soundtacks are re-combined with the dialogue soundtrack.  The volume of the dialogue soundtrack is then precisely set at a level relative to the SoundScape soundtracks, to create the perfect amount of contrast, so the dialogue is clearly audible.  Moviegoers can then clearly hear the dialogue as well as hear the SoundScape and experience the intended ambience of the movie scene.

Signia’s new sound processing engine; Augmented Xperience adopts the same approach with a new technology called Augmented Focus.  The hearing aids include two sound processing chips, each capable of processing a separate track or stream of sound.  One stream is for in front of the wearer, Signia calls this the Focus Stream and one stream for around the wearer, they call this the SoundScape Stream

Just like during movie production, in real time, the hearing aid analyses both the Focus Stream and the SoundScape Stream, then recombines them in a way that optimises speech clarity, while maintaining a natural ambiance.  For example, in less challenging situations, like hearing at a table in a quiet café, the hearing aids may provide equal amplification to the Focus Stream (speech form the table) and the SoundScape Stream (background noises in the Café) to create a natural experience for the wearer.  Alternatively, in more challenging situations, like conversing with a friend on a busy city street, the hearing aids may reduce the volume of the Soundscape Stream (busy street) relative to the Focus Stream (conversation partner), so the hearing aid wearer can hear their conversational partner clearly.

This Augmented Xperience approach is very different from the approach of traditional hearing aids.  Traditional hearing aids process sound in a single stream or track.  Although such systems use advanced directional microphone and noise reduction technology to try to enhance speech in challenging situations, there is often much more of a compromise made, either by reducing or compromising audibility of the SoundScape, therefore reducing ambiance, or alternatively reducing or compromising speech clarity, therefore not understanding the conversation.

Signia Pure Charge&Go Nx Hearing Aid Review

Signia Pure Charge&Go Nx Hearing Aid Review

Lithium-ion rechargeable hearing aids are increasing in popularity in Australia.  In April 2018, Signia (formally Siemens) will launch its new Lithium-ion rechargeable hearing aid: Signia Pure Charge&Go Nx RIC (receiver-in-canal).  The Signia Pure Charge&Go uses Signia’s latest impressive audiological platform: Signia Nx and will be available in three performance levels:

      • 7nx (Premium)
      • 5nx (High-end)
      • 3nx (Mid-range)

      Why Lithium-ion Rechargeability?

There are several advantages of lithium-ion hearing aids:

      • Ease of management and convenience – the wearer never needs to change fiddly zinc-air batteries. The hearing aids are designed so that they are charged every night, so they deliver a full day’s hearing.
      • Reliability and robustness – Doing away with disposable zinc-air batteries means there is no need for a battery door that opens and closes. This means the housing is designed with less gaps improving the hearing aid’s water resistance and general reliability.

Signia is very experienced in the rechargeable space producing rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride hearing aids for well over a decade.  However, the Signia Pure Charge&Go RIC will be Signia’s second generation lithium-ion hearing aid replacing the popular Cellion primax RIC released in 2016 (see review of this model here)

Pure Charge&Go uses an inductive rechargeable system doing away with the need for battery contacts on the hearing aid’s housing.  By using an inductive charging system, the Pure Charge&Go is designed to be extremely easy to use as there is no need to plug it in to be charged.  When the hearing aids are placed in the charger cradle they turn off automatically and when removed, they turn on automatically (no need to fiddle with the controls).  The inductive system also means the hearing aid can be designed as one piece with less openings reducing the risk of moisture or dust/dirt entering the hearing aid.  In fact, the Pure Charge&Go has been certified as achieving an ingress-protection rating (IP) of 68.

The Signia Pure Charge&Go battery takes 3 hours to charge and delivers 19 hours of use.  Signia advises that this time is reduced slightly if the wearer does a lot of wireless audio streaming (e.g. listening to music or taking phone calls).  Signia indicates that wearers can expect 17 hours of use if wearers audio stream for 5 hours.

Pure Charge&Go is considerably smaller than its predecessor Cellion, In the past many wearers were disappointed in the size of lithium-ion hearing aid models as they were comparable in size to traditional 13 size battery models.  The new Pure Charge&Go is considerably smaller and comparable in size to traditional 312 battery models.

      Audiological Performance

Pure Charge&Go uses Signia’s latest audiological chip platform: Signia Nx.  In our opinion this one of the most advanced hearing aid platforms on the market delivering superb sound quality and speech clarity even in challenging situations.  More information about the Signia Nx audiological platform can be found here.

One of the standard out technologies is Signia’s Ultra HD e2e wireless system.  This technology is used to connect the two hearing aids when worn together ensuring the hearing aids act as a binaural “system” rather than independently.  The advantage of this “system” is that each hearing aid processes sound not only from the two microphones on its own hearing aid, but also from the two microphones on the other hearing aid.  This binaural processing technology forms the basis of some very powerful audiological features:

      • Narrow directionality – for improved hearing in background noise (Signia has shown that this can out-perform normal hearing in challenging situations with a lot of background noise*)
      • Own Voice Processing – a unique feature that improves the perception of the wearer’s own voice but independently processing the wearer’s own voice from all other sound in the environment.
      • 3D classification – the hearing aids are able to determine the type of environment the wearer is in and optimally adapt their performance.

      Wireless Audio-Streaming

The Pure Charge&Go also features direct wireless audio streaming technology.  Wearers with Apple (Made for iPhone) devices can audiostream phone calls, music or any other audio input directly into their hearing aids.  Effectively their hearing aids become wireless headsets.  Signia offers a device called StreamLine mic that will enable wearers to wireless stream audio from other non-Apple Bluetooth devices.  The StreamLine mic can also be used as a remote microphone.  Wearers can give the Streamline mic to the person they want to hear (e.g. lecturer) and their voice will be wirelessly streamed into their hearing aids at a distance of up to 20 metres.

      Our Conclusion

At Sounds of Life we are very excited about the Signia Charge & Go.  We believe the lithium-ion technology will improve the wearer’s experience by offering a hassle-free and convenient way of managing their hearing aids.  We have fitted many of the non-rechargeable Signia Nx hearing aids and feedback from our clients has been excellent.  Certainly for active wearers that are regularly in challenging situations with background noise, they benefit significantly from the advanced noise reduction technology in the Signia Nx platform.  Wearers also appreciate the direct audio streaming capabilities for phone use.
